Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave takes Nintendo’s tactical RPG series into a story about gladiatorial competition, divine intervention, time travel, and four heroes whose individual ambitions eventually become part of a much bigger fight.
The Heroic Games are only the beginning. Five years later, the Dagdan Empire is devastated by the return of the demon god Balor, and changing that future means going back to the people who competed for one miraculous wish.

What is Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave?
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is the next mainline Fire Emblem tactical RPG from Intelligent Systems.
It keeps the familiar foundation of grid-based, turn-based battles, unit classes, weapons, positioning, and character progression, but builds the campaign around four different protagonists and a tournament known as the Heroic Games.
The game is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo lists an estimated file size of 29.5 GB and supports handheld, tabletop, and TV play.
Story and setting
The Heroic Games
The main story begins in 1449, when the Dagdan Empire is prosperous and its capital, Dagsion, is preparing for the Heroic Games.
The competition honors Dagda the Great, founder of the empire. The prize is difficult to ignore: according to legend, the champion will be granted one wish.
That promise draws warriors from across the land, including Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda.
Five years later
By 1454, things have gone very badly.
The demon god Balor has returned, and the Dagdan Empire stands on the brink of destruction. A soul sent by the goddess Sothis is tasked with preventing that future.
Fortuna, the Goddess of Fate, provides the key. Her ability to interfere with time lets the protagonist return to the past, guide the four heroes, and try to create a future where Balor can actually be defeated.
Main characters
Cai
Cai comes from the peaceful village of Ribeira. His father has been imprisoned beneath Dagsion, giving Cai a very personal reason to enter the Heroic Games: win the wish and secure his father’s freedom.
Dietrich
Dietrich is a foreign warrior who reaches Dagda after a shipwreck. He enters the tournament because he is constantly searching for stronger opponents and another worthwhile battle.
Theodora
Theodora is the queen of Saramis. She fights to honor her goddess, protect the faith of her people, and pursue the long-held ambitions of her homeland.
Leda
Leda is a talented musician whose father was murdered. When she learns that the killer is connected to the Heroic Games, the tournament becomes her opportunity for revenge.
The customizable protagonist
The player also controls a customizable protagonist summoned in the ruined future. Their job is to use Fortuna’s power to influence events in the past and gather the strength required to confront Balor.
Sothis also returns in an important divine role. That creates an obvious connection for Three Houses fans, although Fortune’s Weave has its own heroes, setting, and central conflict.
Combat and gameplay
Battles use the turn-based tactical structure Fire Emblem is known for. Before combat begins, you choose units and starting positions. Once the fight starts, terrain, range, classes, equipment, and positioning all matter.
Close-range attacks, counterattacks, bows, magic, and Combat Arts all provide different tactical options.
Blaze Arts
The four heroes have special signature attacks called Blaze Arts. These consume HP and fill a Blaze Gauge.
Partially filling that gauge grants a useful power boost. Push it all the way to Burst, however, and the bonuses disappear while the hero’s maximum HP is cut in half.
Blessings
The gods of Dagda can also grant Blessings. These provide battle advantages and can be improved to unlock additional effects.
Classes and progression
Units can improve their classes through certification exams, learn new techniques, wield stronger equipment, and build specialized roles within each hero’s army.
Nintendo has also confirmed a series first for Fortune’s Weave: optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, which can be used to move units and inspect battlefield information.
What you do between battles
The Heroic Games are not one uninterrupted sequence of tactical maps. Between matches, you can spend time preparing in Dagsion.
Training
Training is available at the Arena Plaza. Improving skills can unlock new moves and allow characters to use stronger weapons.
Recruiting and building bonds
You can recruit allies encountered around the city. Some join readily, while others need to be won over through activities such as gifts or meals.
Townspeople also provide requests with specific objectives and deadlines.
Exploring beyond Dagsion
You can leave the capital and travel across Dagda, visiting settlements, gathering information, taking on battles, and collecting resources.
Dungeons are another part of exploration. They contain materials used to strengthen weapons and feature smaller battles called Clashes, where allies take turns attacking enemies.
Time travel and story structure
The four hero campaigns can be progressed in parallel.
Between matches, you can visit the Pale Raven’s perch and switch from one storyline to another rather than completing one character’s entire route before touching the others.
The larger campaign then connects those events in 1449 with the ruined world of 1454. Fortuna’s role is not simply a battle rewind mechanic. Time travel is part of the central story structure.

Returning series elements such as Sothis may carry extra meaning for longtime players, but newcomers can start here.

There are clear links, most notably Sothis, but Nintendo presents Fortune’s Weave as a new story centered on Dagda and its own four heroes rather than as a direct continuation of Three Houses.

Fortune favors the tactician
Fortune’s Weave has several familiar Fire Emblem ingredients, but the structure around them is doing something interesting. The tournament gives the first half a clean competitive hook, while the ruined future makes every personal wish feel much less important once Balor enters the picture.
The question is not simply whether Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, or Leda can win the Heroic Games. It is whether changing their fortunes five years earlier can give the world enough heroes to survive what comes next.
