Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Premium Edition Early Access beginning October 1. The prequel goes back 14 years before the original Gears of War to show Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago surviving Emergence Day itself, while also introducing four-player online campaign co-op, the 12-player Horde Siege mode, rebuilt 4v4 Versus, and a completely modernized movement and cover system.

The Coalition has now finished development for launch, with E-Day officially gone gold. Pre-install begins September 29, meaning most of the important pre-release questions now have concrete answers.

This guide gathers those details in one place: release timing, platforms, Game Pass, story, campaign structure, co-op, multiplayer, editions, preorder bonuses, PC requirements, technical features, and what has actually changed from earlier Gears games.

Gears of War: E-Day releases worldwide on October 6, 2026 at 15:00 UTC.

Players with the Premium Edition can start up to five days earlier, on October 1 at 15:00 UTC.

The Coalition announced on September 17 that E-Day had officially gone gold, meaning the launch build had reached the manufacturing milestone ahead of release.

Pre-install begins on September 29 at 15:00 UTC across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Steam. That applies to eligible preorders and Game Pass players who want the files ready before their access begins.

Dates to remember: September 29 for pre-install, October 1 for Premium Early Access, and October 6 for the worldwide release.

Platforms and Game Pass

E-Day launches on:

  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Xbox on PC
  • Steam

The Xbox version supports Xbox Play Anywhere, so a digital Xbox purchase can be used across Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC with shared progression and achievements.

Cloud play is also available through supported Game Pass cloud gaming access.

Microsoft describes Gears of War: E-Day as an Xbox console exclusive. There is currently no PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch version announced.

The game joins Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on October 6. The five-day Premium Edition Early Access period is separate from normal Game Pass launch access.

Story and setting

E-Day is not Gears 6.

Instead of continuing after Gears 5, The Coalition is going back to the event that created the world the original trilogy eventually inherited.

The story takes place 14 years before the original Gears of War, beginning as the Locust Horde erupts from beneath Sera and launches its first catastrophic attack on humanity.

Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago are much younger here. They are accomplished soldiers, but they have never fought Locust before. Neither has anyone else.

Gears of War: E-Day | Official Story Trailer

That lack of knowledge is important to the tone. Early encounters are deliberately framed closer to a monster invasion than a familiar military conflict. Wretches appear first. Then Drones arrive. Eventually, the soldiers realize they are not dealing with mindless creatures at all, but an organized army capable of communicating, building weapons, and coordinating attacks.

The entire campaign focuses heavily on Kalona, a city built specifically for E-Day. Rather than jumping around Sera to show a global catastrophe from a distance, The Coalition is using one collapsing city to show what Emergence Day actually felt like for the people trapped inside it.

The campaign unfolds across roughly three days as Kalona goes from functioning city to battlefield.

Who is in Bravo Squad?

Marcus and Dom remain the emotional center, but they are joined by two new playable members of Bravo Squad:

  • Mags Carter, a former Gear working at Kalona’s Imulsion Refinery
  • Lucas Reyes, a young communications officer and military cadet

Returning Gears character Tai Kaliso also plays a significant role in the campaign.

Campaign and co-op

E-Day’s campaign can be played solo, in two-player split-screen on console, or with up to four players online.

All four Bravo Squad characters are playable from the beginning, allowing a full online group to experience the story together rather than treating additional players as generic substitutes.

The campaign is not an open-world game. The Coalition has built Kalona as a continuous, believable city behind the scenes, but the actual campaign follows a more focused Gears-style structure rather than asking players to clear a giant map full of icons.

Creative director Matt Searcy has said the campaign runs over 14 hours and is longer than any campaign The Coalition has made previously. It also includes more collectibles than the studio’s previous Gears campaigns, including returning COG Tags.

Gameplay changes

The Coalition describes E-Day as being built from scratch rather than constructed directly on Gears 5’s gameplay foundation.

The pillars are still unmistakably Gears: cover, heavy movement, brutal weapons, aggressive enemies, and very bad things happening to anyone caught in the open.

The difference is how many new options now connect those ideas.

Gears of War: E-Day | Official Gameplay Demo

Cover has been rebuilt

E-Day supports more cover shapes and heights, including low-ground cover that can leave a Gear lying lower behind damaged walls or debris.

Cover can also create smaller gaps that you can duck or slide through, while certain openings can be used to aim and fire through spaces such as vehicle windows.

Jumping, climbing, and sliding are new

Movement receives one of the biggest overhauls in the series.

You can now:

  • slide out of a sprint
  • fire while sliding
  • jump across gaps
  • grab ledges and climb
  • mantle without first entering cover
  • use vertical routes for flanking

The Coalition is still trying to preserve the series’ heavy armored feel. This is not suddenly a wall-running mobility shooter. Momentum matters, direction changes are more readable, and cover remains one of the quickest ways to move around a firefight.

Gunplay changes too

Weapons now use simulated projectile travel instead of everything behaving like instantaneous hits. Shoulder swapping while aiming is also supported.

Returning weapons receive mechanical changes. The Gnasher, for example, has a round-by-round active reload system and a six-shell capacity. The original-style Hammerburst returns with a six-round burst, while the Breechshot can once again deliver devastating headshots.

There is also a Weapon Mod system in Campaign and Horde Siege, giving players ways to adjust familiar weapons beyond simply finding another gun.

The Locust are supposed to be frightening again

E-Day rebuilds familiar creatures rather than simply importing old enemy behavior.

Armored Wretches can disorient players with screams. Drones appear in multiple tactical variants. Seeders return as more involved combat encounters, Boomers can eventually be chainsaw-executed, and Reavers can function as troop transports before becoming major battlefield threats themselves.

The intent is to restore some of the horror attached to meeting the Locust in the original game, except this time even Marcus and Dom have no idea what they are looking at.

Horde Siege explained

Horde Siege is E-Day’s major new PvE mode.

Instead of one squad sitting in a single defensive position for an entire traditional Horde run, Horde Siege puts three squads of four players onto much larger sections of Kalona.

Each four-player squad has its own mission, but all three exist on the same battlefield. You may cross paths, fight the same major invasion event, use fortifications another squad left behind, or even rescue players from a different team.

At launch, Horde Siege has three large maps and four classes:

ClassRole
AssaultFlexible mid-range fighter with a Sonic Disruptor
BreacherClose-range frontline class with an Adrenaline Injector
MarksmanPrecision damage class with a Pulse Drone
MedicHealing and revival specialist with a Stim Vaporizer

Each class launches with 30 progression levels, unlocking weapons, equipment, Armor Mods, Tactical Gear Mods, and Weapon Mods.

Mission length varies too. Blitz missions target roughly 15-20 minutes, standard Siege missions can run around 20-40 minutes, while Horde playlists can stretch toward 50-60 minutes.

The mode is built around completing objectives, gathering Energy, buying equipment and defenses, surviving invasion events, improving weapons, and eventually extracting alive.

Versus multiplayer

Traditional competitive Gears is not being replaced by Horde Siege.

Versus returns as 4v4 PvP, using E-Day’s new movement system while keeping the familiar battle over cover, lanes, and map weapons.

Every player starts a Versus match with the same basic loadout, and Weapon Mods are disabled to keep the competitive playing field consistent.

Four core modes are confirmed for launch:

  • Team Deathmatch
  • Conquest, a zone-control mode derived from King of the Hill
  • Demolition, built around planting and defending a neutral bomb
  • Crucible, a new mode focused on carrying a Power Core inside a moving scoring zone

There are six new Versus maps at launch: Outpost, Battleship, Park, Precinct, Market, and Skyward.

Competitive players can use Ranked playlists, while Social supports more relaxed matchmaking, rotating experiences, bots, and limited-time modes.

Multiplayer progression, cosmetics, and post-launch content

E-Day still has a premium currency called Iron, but The Coalition is taking a noticeably more old-school approach to multiplayer progression.

There is no Battle Pass and no Tour of Duty.

Almost every multiplayer customization item can be unlocked simply by playing. Challenges, achievements, medals, match completion, Player Levels, and earnable Coins feed into the system.

That includes character skins, weapon skin sets, poses, banners, emblems, icons, titles, and menu music.

Some content remains paid-only, including Premium Edition items, certain charity bundles, and limited partnership items.

E-Day will also receive seasonal support after launch. The Coalition has already confirmed additional Horde Siege classes, maps, missions, modifiers, seasonal events, and limited-time Versus modes.

Emergence begins October 6

Gears of War: E-Day is simultaneously looking backward and rebuilding almost everything underneath the old formula.

Marcus and Dom are back. The Locust are horrifying again. Cover and active reloads still matter. The campaign remains focused instead of turning Kalona into a giant checklist-driven open world.

But underneath that familiarity is a different movement system, four-player campaign co-op, weapon modification, much larger PvE battles, redesigned Versus, and an Unreal Engine 5 technical foundation built specifically for this game.

The most important part is that the wait is nearly over.

Pre-install starts September 29. Premium players enter Kalona on October 1. Emergence Day begins for everyone else on October 6.
