Minecraft Dungeons II launches on September 29, 2026, taking Mojang’s approachable dungeon crawler into a larger interconnected world with new enemies, deeper equipment customization, a new dimension called the Sift, and four-player online or couch co-op.

The sequel keeps the original game’s easy-to-understand action RPG formula: fight mobs, grab better loot, combine weapons, armor, artifacts and enchantments, then use your new build against tougher enemies. The major difference is that Minecraft Dungeons II is expanding almost every part of that loop.

Instead of simply selecting isolated missions from a map, the sequel has a connected Overworld filled with dungeons and places to explore. Characters get more equipment slots, talismans introduce passive bonuses, jumping gives exploration another dimension, and the story expands beyond the Overworld into the mysterious Sift.

Story

The first Minecraft Dungeons revolved around the Arch-Illager and the Orb of Dominance. The sequel introduces a different crisis.

Strange rifts have begun opening around the Overworld. Mobs are being changed by mysterious energy, sculk is spreading into new areas, and the disturbances eventually lead to an entirely new dimension known as the Sift.

The group behind the crisis is the Illager High Council, made up of the Prime Enchanter, Grand Illusioner, and Supreme Evoker. The council is using the Sift as a staging ground and sending soul-corrupted forces into other worlds.

That gives the sequel a simple setup: gear up, follow the rifts, travel across two worlds, and stop the Illager High Council before its campaign gets any further out of control.

You do not need to finish the original Minecraft Dungeons to understand the sequel. Mojang explicitly says newcomers can begin with Dungeons II, although returning players will naturally recognize more of the world and its history.

Gameplay

Minecraft Dungeons II is still an action RPG rather than traditional Minecraft. There is no emphasis on mining blocks and building enormous castles. This is about hacking through groups of enemies, exploring dangerous areas, defeating bosses, finding loot and gradually assembling stronger character builds.

The classless approach from the original returns. You do not pick Warrior, Mage, Ranger or another permanent class when creating your hero. Your equipment determines what kind of hero you become.

Melee weapons can turn you into a close-range bruiser. Bows provide ranged options. Artifacts work like active powers and spells. Enchantments modify equipment further.

The sequel then adds considerably more room for specialization.

Characters now have four separate armor slots instead of treating armor as a single piece of equipment, alongside the familiar melee weapon, ranged weapon and three artifact slots. There are also three talisman slots for passive effects.

One talisman shown during an official Xbox demonstration, for example, summoned a dog companion that attacked enemies and helped draw their attention. Combined with enchantments and other equipment, systems like this should make more specialized builds possible without pushing Dungeons II toward the complexity of a hardcore ARPG.

The Overworld is more connected this time

World structure is another major change.

The original Minecraft Dungeons presented its adventures as individual missions selected from a map. Dungeons II instead places its action in a fixed, interconnected Overworld with dungeons embedded throughout it.

That should make exploration feel more like traveling through an actual place rather than moving from one isolated mission to another.

Your hero can also jump this time, a simple addition that gives level designers more freedom to hide paths, build vertical spaces and make exploration feel less restricted.

The Sift adds an entirely new dimension

The Overworld is only part of the journey.

Rifts lead into the Sift, a new dimension filled with unfamiliar environments and threats. It is also central to the story, since the Illager High Council is using it to unleash its soul-corrupted forces.

Mojang has deliberately kept some of the Sift’s locations and creatures under wraps, but the official gameplay footage shows environments that move beyond straightforward remixes of familiar Minecraft biomes.

Co-op and multiplayer

Like its predecessor, Minecraft Dungeons II is designed to work both alone and as a co-op game.

You can play with up to four players, with both online and couch co-op supported. Official Xbox coverage also confirms matchmaking with other players in addition to playing directly with friends.

That accessible co-op structure remains one of Dungeons II’s biggest differences from more demanding action RPGs. You can spend time optimizing enchantments, talismans and equipment combinations, but the underlying combat is still designed so that someone who simply wants to pick up a controller and smash Minecraft mobs can understand what is happening.

Minecraft Dungeons II vs. Minecraft Dungeons

Minecraft Dungeons II is clearly recognizable as a sequel to the 2020 game rather than a reinvention, but several changes make it more than another collection of missions.

FeatureMinecraft DungeonsMinecraft Dungeons II
World structureSeparate missions selected from a world mapA fixed, interconnected world containing dungeons
ArmorOne main armor slotFour armor slots for deeper customization
TalismansNot part of the original equipment structureThree talisman slots providing passive bonuses
MovementGround-based movement and dodge rollingAdds jumping for combat and exploration
WorldsPrimarily Minecraft’s familiar dimensions and DLC destinationsOverworld plus the new Sift dimension
BuildcraftWeapons, armor, artifacts and enchantmentsExpanded armor system and talismans add more ways to specialize builds

The underlying idea has not changed. This is still an accessible Minecraft-flavored action RPG where loot defines your build and four players can clear enemies together. The sequel is mostly about making that formula larger, more connected and more flexible.

Minecraft Dungeons II editions

Minecraft Dungeons II is launching in Standard and Deluxe Editions.

EditionOfficial U.S. Xbox priceIncluded content
Standard Edition$29.99Minecraft Dungeons II base game
Deluxe Edition$49.99Base game, four hero skins, Soul Cape, Blub pet, and DLC 1 + DLC 2 when released

The Deluxe Edition is therefore the one aimed at players who already expect to stick around for future content. Its biggest practical difference is access to DLC 1 and DLC 2 when those expansions become available.

Detailed release dates and full content breakdowns for those two DLC packs have not yet been announced in the official information available before launch.

Pre-order bonus

Pre-orders placed through participating retailers before launch can include two hero skins, the Twisted Cape and the Twisted Chicken pet.

The two skins are versions of Minecraft’s Steve and Alex prepared for their dungeon-crawling adventure, while the Twisted Chicken is a soul-infused pet and the Twisted Cape provides another cosmetic option.

Mojang says the pre-order promotion runs through September 28, 2026, although exact availability can depend on platform, retailer and region.

There is another reward for returning players. Play the original Minecraft Dungeons and then Minecraft Dungeons II using the same Microsoft account before December 31, 2026, and you can qualify for the Hero Cape. The cape can also become available on that account in Minecraft: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

The Deluxe Edition includes the base game, four hero skins, the Soul Cape, the Blub pet, DLC 1 and DLC 2 as those expansions are released.

What is the Sift?

A bigger dungeon crawl without losing the simple appeal

Minecraft Dungeons II does not look interested in turning a deliberately approachable dungeon crawler into a spreadsheet simulator.

Instead, Mojang and Double Eleven are adding depth in places where the first game left room to grow: a connected world, more armor pieces, passive talismans, greater build flexibility, jumping, new enemies and an entirely new dimension.

The result still looks like Minecraft Dungeons. You gather friends, dive into dangerous places, turn mobs into showers of loot and continually replace perfectly good equipment because another sword has a slightly more exciting number attached to it.

There is just considerably more dungeon to crawl through this time.
