Onimusha: Way of the Sword is Capcom’s full return to the series after nearly two decades without a new mainline entry. It keeps the historical dark-fantasy formula, Genma enemies, Oni powers, soul absorption, and signature Issen attacks, but rebuilds the combat around a much more modern third-person action system.

The game stars Miyamoto Musashi, not Samanosuke Akechi, the protagonist most closely associated with the original Onimusha. Capcom is using the legendary swordsman as the center of a new story set in an early Edo-period Kyoto consumed by Malice and invaded by Genma.

Story and setting

Way of the Sword takes place in Kyoto during the early Edo period, where a supernatural force called Malice has twisted the capital and allowed the Genma to enter the human world. Temples, shrines, streets, and mountain regions that should be familiar parts of historical Kyoto become warped by dark fantasy.

Musashi arrives in Kyoto because he wants to prove himself as an unmatched swordsman. Instead, he becomes bound to the Oni Gauntlet and pulled into a conflict against the Genma. Capcom is deliberately using real places, myths, and legends from Kyoto as foundations for its supernatural reinterpretation of the city.

Kyoto is part history, part nightmare

Capcom has cited locations such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Mount Oe, and Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple while discussing the game’s version of Kyoto. The developers worked with historical experts while also incorporating legends of yokai, hell, and other supernatural stories associated with the region.

Mount Oe, for example, becomes the territory of the colossal Genma Shuten Doji, who claims to be the legendary Oni of the same name.

Who is the protagonist of Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

The protagonist is Miyamoto Musashi, Capcom’s interpretation of the historical swordsman.

That is an important break from the character many players immediately associate with Onimusha. This is not another Samanosuke Akechi adventure. Samanosuke was the hero of the original Onimusha: Warlords and returned in later entries, while Onimusha 2 starred Jubei Yagyu. Way of the Sword instead builds a new story around Musashi.

Toshiro Mifune is Musashi’s face model

Capcom licensed the likeness of legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune as the face model for its version of Musashi. The developers wanted a visually striking samurai who could suit a story built around brutal, muddy, close-range combat.

Musashi does not initially welcome the supernatural power given to him. Part of his character conflict comes from the contrast between a warrior determined to become strong through his own ability and the unwanted power of the Oni Gauntlet.

Gameplay

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a third-person action game built heavily around sword-to-sword combat.

It is much faster and more cinematic than the fixed-camera Onimusha games of the PS2 era, but several of the series’ defining ideas remain intact: Issen counterattacks, soul absorption, Oni powers, dangerous Genma, and tactical decisions about when to attack or defend.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword - Game Overview Trailer

Parry, deflect and punish

Combat revolves around reading enemy attacks and controlling the flow of a duel.

Musashi can parry and deflect blows, dodge attacks, break defenses, and capitalize on openings. Successful defensive play can create opportunities for devastating counters instead of simply reducing incoming damage.

The block system can also respond to attacks from multiple directions, helping fights against groups remain fluid rather than forcing Musashi to constantly disengage from one enemy at a time.

Issen returns

The signature Issen attack is still a major part of Onimusha.

It rewards extremely precise timing by allowing Musashi to answer an incoming attack with a devastating critical strike. The classic risk-reward idea remains intact: mistime the counter and Musashi can take heavy damage.

Modern technology lets Capcom make those strikes considerably more physical. Way of the Sword includes dynamic dismemberment, with cuts corresponding to where Musashi’s blade passes through an enemy.

Oni powers and soul absorption

The Oni Gauntlet is central to both the story and combat.

As in earlier Onimusha games, defeated Genma release souls that can be absorbed. Way of the Sword updates the mechanic for its faster combat by allowing Musashi to absorb souls while moving.

Oni Armaments

Musashi can use supernatural Oni Armaments such as The Two Celestials, a pair of large blades, and Wind-Whipper, a twin-blade weapon capable of creating a tornado around him.

Oni Strength

Oni Strength lets Musashi overwhelm defenses with raw supernatural force. It also has applications outside ordinary combat, including destroying obstacles.

Oni Agility

Oni Agility emphasizes speed and movement. One demonstrated application allows Musashi to run across designated walls and reach otherwise inaccessible areas.

Exploration and progression

Way of the Sword is not simply a sequence of duel arenas.

Capcom has shown exploration through temples, mountain areas, corrupted city spaces, and other parts of Kyoto. Oni abilities can interact with the environment, while Spirit Mirrors provide access to systems such as appearance changes as the game progresses.

The demo takes players through part of Kiyomizu-dera Temple before a confrontation with Musashi’s rival, Sasaki Ganryu. It includes early-game material and lets players experiment with parries, deflects, Issen attacks, Oni Armaments, and soul absorption.

Difficulty and accessibility

Despite the emphasis on timing and parries, Capcom is specifically not positioning Way of the Sword as an intentionally punishing Soulslike.

The developers have said the goal is satisfying swordplay that a broad range of players can enjoy. There are Story and Action difficulty settings, while the Action Guide can further adjust the challenge for players who want help learning the combat.

Weapon switching also slows the action temporarily, reducing the pressure of changing Oni Armaments during a fight.

That distinction matters. Way of the Sword may appeal to Sekiro players because of its emphasis on parries and sword clashes, but Capcom’s stated design target is a flexible action game rather than a test built around extreme difficulty.

Who will enjoy Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

Longtime Onimusha fans

The obvious audience is anyone who missed the series’ mix of historical Japan and demonic horror.

Issen, Genma, Oni powers, soul absorption, and the Oni Gauntlet all return, even though the combat and camera have been thoroughly modernized.

Players who love precise melee combat

If perfectly timed counters, parries, deflections, and aggressive sword fights are more appealing than long combo strings, Way of the Sword should be worth watching.

The game is built around the sensation of blades colliding and turning defense into offense.

Sekiro fans who want something less punishing

There is an obvious overlap in the appeal of deflection-heavy samurai combat.

The crucial difference is that Capcom is offering more adjustable difficulty options and has explicitly said it does not want to make the game difficult simply for difficulty’s sake.

Fans of Capcom’s modern action games

Way of the Sword has the presentation and responsiveness expected from modern Capcom rather than trying to recreate a PS2-era action game unchanged.

The over-the-shoulder camera, faster movement, cinematic boss encounters, dismemberment, and more expressive combat make this a reinvention rather than a nostalgic remaster.

Players interested in Japanese history and dark fantasy

Historical Kyoto is not merely a background texture. Capcom has researched real locations and legends, then twisted them into the Onimusha universe. That makes the game potentially appealing even to players who have never touched the older entries.

Capcom is presenting Way of the Sword as an all-new entry with its own protagonist and story, so it is designed as a reasonable starting point for newcomers.

A new blade for Onimusha

Way of the Sword is not trying to pretend the last 20 years of action-game design never happened.

Its camera, pace, animations, mobility, and combat systems are clearly built for a modern audience. At the same time, Capcom has kept the things that make the series recognizable: Genma, the Oni Gauntlet, soul absorption, Issen attacks, Japanese history, and supernatural horror.

The biggest change is the man holding the sword. Instead of returning once again to Samanosuke, Capcom is putting Miyamoto Musashi at the center of a new chapter and letting one of history’s most famous swordsmen loose in an Onimusha version of Kyoto.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches September 4, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
