Phantom Blade Zero is one of those action RPGs that immediately looks familiar and strange at the same time. There are precision parries, enormous bosses, dark environments, semi-open maps, and enough blades to stock a small dynasty.

Then someone unfolds a mechanical weapon, an assassin moves like they escaped from a Hong Kong martial-arts film, and the whole thing starts looking less like another Soulslike and more like its own sharply dressed monster.

Phantom Blade Zero story premise and main character

The protagonist is Soul, a highly skilled assassin associated with an organization known as the Order.

Soul is framed for the murder of his master, suffers a devastating injury to his heart, and is left with only 66 days to live. His remaining time becomes both a ticking clock and a reason to keep moving. He must survive the assassins hunting him, clear his name, and uncover a conspiracy threatening the wider martial world.

The setup follows familiar wuxia themes: loyalty, betrayal, reputation, revenge, martial honor, and a hero forced to decide what his principles are worth when death is already waiting.

Side quests may also affect the central narrative. S-GAME has discussed smaller choices feeding back into Soul’s wider journey, although the game is not expected to use a conventional good-versus-evil morality meter.

What does kung-fu-punk mean?

S-GAME describes the setting and artistic direction as kung-fu-punk.

The kung-fu part draws on wuxia fiction, traditional martial arts, weapon choreography, wandering warriors, secret societies, and the exaggerated physical skill associated with classic Chinese action cinema.

The punk part is where things get weird. Mechanical prosthetics, weaponized machines, unnatural body modification, industrial devices, and strange technology exist alongside temples, swords, forests, villages, and old martial traditions.

The result is not historical China. It is a dark fantasy world built from Chinese cultural foundations, then deliberately distorted with machinery, supernatural horror, and visual ideas that do not belong to one clean period.

S-GAME is using Unreal Engine 5 and motion capture to recreate the speed and rhythm of cinematic martial arts. The combat choreography draws particular inspiration from the golden age of Hong Kong kung-fu films.

Phantom Blade Zero - Official Teaser Trailer | State of Play 2026

How does Phantom Blade Zero play?

Phantom Blade Zero is a fast single-player action RPG built around melee combat, active defense, weapon switching, and cinematic boss battles.

Soul can combine light and heavy attacks into flowing strings, evade incoming blows, parry at the right moment, break enemy defenses, and use different weapons to change the rhythm of a fight.

Combat looks faster and more aggressive than a traditional Soulslike. Soul covers ground quickly, transitions between strikes without much downtime, and can perform elaborate finishing attacks that look choreographed without turning every encounter into a cutscene.

Boss fights are designed around reading attacks, parrying, dodging, and knowing when to interrupt an enemy’s sequence. Ordinary battles can involve groups of assassins, armored opponents, mechanical enemies, and creatures twisted by the setting’s supernatural side.

Is Phantom Blade Zero open world?

Phantom Blade Zero uses a semi-open structure rather than one enormous continuous map.

S-GAME has described the game as a collection of reasonably sized, handcrafted areas. These maps can contain side activities, alternate routes, secrets, enemies, and optional encounters without stretching the adventure across a giant world full of repeated content.

This structure should give the game room for exploration while keeping the environments focused. It also allows weapons and movement abilities to support navigation, with some equipment potentially helping Soul access new routes or interact with the environment.

Known weapons in Phantom Blade Zero

The official Steam page confirms that Phantom Blade Zero will feature more than 30 primary weapons and over 20 unusual secondary armaments.

Official trailers and gameplay footage have shown Soul using several distinct weapon types, including swords, heavier blades, polearms, flexible weapons, ranged equipment, and mechanical devices. However, S-GAME has not yet published a complete English-language list of their final names.

Switching tools and learning their individual movesets appears to be part of the main progression loop.

Is Phantom Blade Zero a Soulslike?

Phantom Blade Zero shares several surface features with Soulslike games: dark environments, dangerous bosses, parries, evasive movement, stamina-like restrictions, and carefully timed defense.

However, S-GAME has repeatedly positioned it as a faster action RPG rather than a strict Soulslike. Its combat is more fluid, combo-focused, and cinematic, with visible influence from character-action games and martial-arts films.

The announced Hellwalker difficulty is aimed at players who want a harder challenge, but the game is not being built solely around punishment. The wider goal is to reward stylish execution, weapon mastery, and aggressive control of a fight.

The blade is almost ready

Phantom Blade Zero has a strong hook even before the first sword leaves its sheath. Soul has been framed, his heart is failing, and the world around him appears to have replaced common sense with assassins, monsters, mechanical weapons, and kung-fu conspiracies.

The real test will be whether the finished game can make its elaborate combat feel as responsive as it looks. If S-GAME gets that part right, kung-fu-punk might stop sounding like a strange marketing phrase and start sounding like a genre other developers wish they had invented first.
