Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a prequel that pushes the series toward more direct combat without abandoning stealth, puzzles, historical mystery, and the supernatural influence of the Macula.

Its story spans two very different periods, combining Sophia’s medieval journey with events from the ancient Minoan world. Here is everything confirmed about its release, editions, story, connection to the previous games, and gameplay.

1. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy release date

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy launches on August 27, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

PC players will be able to get it through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The game is also confirmed for Xbox Game Pass on day one and supports Xbox Play Anywhere.

Yes. Preorders are already open across the confirmed platforms, and preordering includes a free bonus DLC called The Heritage Pack.

Resonance preorder bonus

The Heritage Pack contains:

  • The Minoan Sword
  • Alec’s Pendant
  • An in-game artbook with more than 30 pages

The pack is attached to preorders rather than a more expensive edition, so players do not need to purchase a collector package to receive it.

2. Available editions

Standard Edition

The standard digital version contains Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy.

Players who preorder it also receive the Heritage Pack with the Minoan Sword, Alec’s Pendant, and digital artbook.

Resonance Collector’s Box

There is also an exclusive Collector’s Box produced with Neamedia Icons. It is aimed at fans who want physical memorabilia centered around Sophia and Theseus.

The officially listed contents are:

  • Exclusive Sophia and Theseus figurine
  • Premium SteelBook
  • Three exclusive art prints
  • Replica of Sophia’s ring

Focus Entertainment’s announced contents do not list a copy of the game among the items inside the box, so buyers should check the specific retailer listing rather than assuming the Collector’s Box replaces the Standard Edition.

European preorders opened first, with availability in the Americas and Asia planned separately.

3. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy story

Resonance follows a much younger Sophia, long before players meet her in A Plague Tale: Requiem.

What was supposed to be a major heist involving the gang once led by Sophia’s late father goes disastrously wrong. Forced to flee Venice, Sophia travels with her companion Leni toward the mysterious Minotaur’s Island, a place that has seemingly called to her since childhood.

Her journey becomes a search for the truth about her family, a mysterious treasure, and an ancient curse buried beneath the island.

The Minotaur’s Island

The island mixes medieval ruins with much older secrets. Sophia is pursued by enemies who want to reclaim its mysterious treasure, but the soldiers chasing her are not the greatest danger waiting underground.

A restless presence stalks the island and appears to understand Sophia’s movements. As she travels deeper, the myths surrounding the place begin looking much less mythical.

Theseus and the second timeline

Sophia’s adventure is connected to events from ancient Minoan times. Players will also control Theseus, a mythological warrior living more than 2,000 years before her.

Sophia experiences the echoes of his life as she investigates the island. Their stories gradually become intertwined through a curse, the island’s mysteries, and the influence of the Macula.

How is Resonance connected to A Plague Tale: Innocence and Requiem?

Resonance is a prequel to the previous A Plague Tale games. It takes place 15 years before Requiem and explores Sophia’s earlier life, long before her journey intersects with Amicia and Hugo.

That makes the connection more substantial than simply sharing the setting. Sophia was already an important ally in Requiem, and Resonance now explains where she came from and how her earlier experiences shaped the person players eventually meet.

The game also digs further into the origins and legacy of the Macula, one of the supernatural forces at the heart of Innocence and Requiem.

Do you need to play Innocence or Requiem first?

No. Asobo Studio has designed Resonance so the story can be understood without playing either earlier game.

Existing fans will naturally recognize Sophia and understand more of the significance surrounding the Macula, but newcomers can start here without needing a full series recap.

4. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy gameplay

Resonance remains a third-person action-adventure, but Sophia is a far more direct fighter than the protagonists of the previous games. Asobo describes this entry as having a stronger focus on challenging, close-range combat.

Sword and dagger combat

Sophia fights using a sword and dagger, chaining quick attacks while reacting to enemy moves with precisely timed parries.

Large groups can surround her, so survival depends on movement, timing, and controlling where enemies are positioned rather than simply trading blows.

Parries and fast combos

Parrying is one of the central defensive mechanics. Correct timing can create openings for fast counterattacks, while Sophia can chain sword strikes, dagger attacks, kicks, and other moves together.

That gives Resonance a more aggressive combat rhythm than the stealth-heavy vulnerability associated with much of Innocence.

The grappling hook

Sophia also carries a grappling hook that works both in traversal and combat.

During fights, it can pull enemies toward her or throw them into environmental hazards. That makes the surroundings part of the combat system, especially when Sophia is outnumbered.

Stealth is still important

The stronger combat focus does not mean every encounter needs to become a sword fight. Stealth remains part of Resonance, allowing Sophia to evade threats, use her surroundings, and approach dangerous areas more carefully.

This should make combat a viable tool without completely abandoning the tension and vulnerability associated with A Plague Tale.

Puzzles and the Minoan sphere

Exploration also involves ancient puzzles. Sophia gains access to a Minoan sphere that can manipulate light, a force tied to the mechanisms Daedalus built into the island.

These puzzles help open routes through the ruins and reveal more of the island’s history, keeping environmental problem-solving alongside the expanded combat.

Two protagonists, two eras

The playable shift between Sophia and Theseus is not only a storytelling device. The Minoan sections put players directly into events that happened thousands of years earlier, revealing how actions from the past connect to dangers Sophia encounters in the Middle Ages.

How long is Resonance?

Focus Entertainment’s official FAQ estimates that Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy takes approximately 20 hours to complete.

Games to play before Resonance

The obvious preparation is the previous A Plague Tale games. Both are made by Asobo Studio and establish the world, the Macula, and the version of Sophia whose past Resonance explores.

The plague has a much older story

Resonance is not simply filling time between major A Plague Tale sequels. By making Sophia the protagonist and connecting her medieval journey to Theseus and the ancient Minoan world, Asobo has room to explore parts of the Macula’s history that Amicia and Hugo could only encounter from the present.

The gameplay shift is just as noticeable. Sophia is capable of meeting enemies with a sword rather than always looking for the nearest hiding place, but stealth, puzzles, dangerous pursuit sequences, and supernatural mystery remain firmly attached to the series’ identity.

On August 27, the question will no longer be what happened after Requiem. It will be how far back the curse really goes.
