The game provides you with an easy to learn but hard to master type of gameplay. Your main task is to build and maintain factories which are located on a hostile planet. Thus, not only you have to take care of resources and constant development but you also need to protect yourself and your factories from constant attacks. Remember though that it isn't a typical "craft stuff" game. 

You can manually mine your basic elements at first: stone, coal, iron, and copper. Then you can smelt iron and copper plates. But then, why not create coal-powered mines to work for you? And then pumps, boilers, and steam engines to get electricity going. After that you can build other elements like convoy belts or trains. Slowly but surely you are going to make your factories flourish. Plan your development carefully and soon you will find yourself in the position of a leader of a group of prospering factories.

Factorio's ground-up modding support has allowed content creators from around the world to design interesting and innovative features. If you insist, then you can create your own mods and elements which might completely change the gameplay. The only thing that can stop you is your own imagination.

Be careful when you start playing Factorio. A simple "I am just going to check the game" might turn around into more than a few hours of a constant gameplay. There are so many things you can do, it will be hard for you to turn it off. Still, it is worth every minute. You will learn so many new things about making various factories and taking care of them.

Research new technologies

You are clever and skilfull, but you probably don't know everything on how to run factories. Research the technologies to make your way up the tree to completely automated and self-sufficient factories. You need to adapt and constantly develop new technologies. Otherwise you are going to stay behind. Furthermore, if you are tired of manually building another mining site, just use a blueprint. 

Define what should be built, provide the material and a bunch of building drones will build the whole thing for you.
