Steep is an online multiplayer sports game developed by Ubisoft Annecy and published by Ubisoft. The game takes the player to the open world of the Alps where they can participate in various types of extreme sports, such as snowboarding, skiing, and paragliding. The game features a non-linear story mode, where the player’s character seeks to become the winter sports’ legend.
Welcome to the Alps
Steep is set in an open world environment based on the mountain ranges of the Alps. The game world is divided into several regions, each based on a specific mountain. These regions include Mont Blanc, Matterhorn, Tyrol, Aravis and more. The regions have their own drop zones, challenges and points of interest. The player can roam the regions freely, skiing and snowboarding in the slopes or paragliding and wingsuit gliding in the air. The player should be careful not to crash into other players using the slopes, however that feature can be turned off in the menu.
Extreme winter sports gameplay
Steep features many of the popular extreme winter sports, like skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, wingsuiting. Participating in challenges offered by each sport rewards the player with points medals. Additional points are awarded for performing tricks. The challenges are specific to the sport the player chose to participate in and include big air challenges, forest slaloms, and proximity flying. The game features a single-player campaign, where the player character aims to become the legend of winter sports.
Reception
Steep for PC received positive reviews from both critics and players. The game was praised for its freestyle approach, allowing the player to choose their own playstyle, either challenge-focused or more relaxing, oriented on experiencing the mountain vistas. The graphics of the game were also noted for bringing out the true majesty of the Alps, increasing the immersion through realistic representation weather conditions. Steep was also praised for its multiplayer functionalities, such as sharing the results with friends and creating the player’s unique passes and sharing them in the Mountain View mode.
