Dune is a legendary sci-fi novel created by Frank Herbert in the 1960s, telling the story of a distant future and the desert planet of Arrakis — home to the universe’s most valuable resource, Melange (commonly known as The Spice), a substance that expands consciousness and unlocks extraordinary abilities.

Herbert’s world has since inspired countless forms of art, several major film adaptations, and a handful of truly memorable video games. Now, we can once again dive into the dangerous and mesmerizing universe through Dune: Awakening — the latest title set on the endless sands of Arrakis.

What is Dune Awakening About?

Like many other Dune-inspired titles, Dune: Awakening transports us to the desert planet of Arrakis — but this time with a twist.

The game introduces an alternate version of the world where Paul Atreides, the iconic protagonist of the novels and films, was never born. Instead, his father, Duke Leto Atreides, is locked in a brutal war against the Harkonnen Empire. Meanwhile, the Fremen — the native desert dwellers — have mysteriously vanished.

We take on the role of a prisoner whose fate quickly shifts. As we rise through the ranks, we must uncover the mystery behind the disappearance of the Fremen and eventually choose our place in the escalating planetary conflict.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Given the political depth of the Dune universe, most games based on the franchise have traditionally been strategy titles focusing on power struggles. Dune Awakening, however, takes a completely fresh approach.

Developed by Funcom, this title is a multiplayer survival game with a third-person perspective and a vast open world. It blends elements of RPG progression, deep character customization, crafting, fortress building, sandbox combat, and more — offering a full-fledged simulation of surviving (and thriving) on Arrakis.

We can shape our characters based on our preferred play styles, mastering one or multiple disciplines from the Great Schools of the Imperium. Guilds play a central role, allowing us to band together to seize true desert power.

Naturally, surviving on Arrakis comes with no shortage of dangers: one wrong step could summon a terrifying sandworm, deadly sandstorms can strike without warning, and ongoing house conflicts might force us into difficult political decisions.

What's more, server-wide politics driven by the Landsraad council allow collective player choices to shape the world’s evolving story — making every player's allegiance and strategy matter on a grand scale.
