Fortnite is a battle royale game that has been popular and well-received by players since its release in 2017.
The game operates on a free-to-play model and offers several modes, making it appealing to fans of “last man standing” gameplay, tower defence-shooter, and creative world-building.
A significant part of the game includes skins that players can assign to their characters. These cosmetic items enhance gameplay, allowing players to personalize their avatars. They can be obtained by purchasing them with V-Bucks, unlocking them by completing special tasks during seasonal events, or redeeming codes from various partners.
If you’re a Fortnite player, you know exactly what we’re talking about, and you’ve probably already come across characters in the game that looked truly unique. Most likely, it’s because they owned one of the most rare skins!
You can find Fortnite Deals on G2A.COM.
How did they get it, and can you buy or unlock them too? What is the rarest skin in Fortnite? Today, we invite you to check out our top list of the rarest skins, along with a guide on how to unlock them!
Cobalt
Rarity: | Epic |
This is an impressive skin resembling a mysterious operative equipped with high-tech gear, black tactical attire, and a turquoise mask with glowing yellow eyes. It’s truly striking!
This Epic Outfit was released during Season 7 on January 30, 2019, alongside The Cobalt Pack, which included various other cosmetic items, upgrades, and a substantial amount of V-Bucks. The pack was reasonably priced at just $4.99. So, how can you get it now?
You can’t. The ability to acquire it ended in March 2019 when The Cobalt Pack was discontinued. This makes it extremely rare — so if you have this skin in your collection, consider yourself lucky!
Ragnarok
Rarity: | Legendary |
This Legendary Outfit is part of the Harbinger Set. It was available in five stages, with the base stage resembling a fearsome Viking with a chest-crossing belt, silver beard, and glowing blue eyes and tattoos. Each subsequent stage added gear to the outfit.
This Legendary Outfit could be unlocked by reaching Tier 100 in Season 5 Battle Pass, with each stage requiring a significant amount of Season XP (Stage 5 required a staggering 500,000 XP).
Unlocking all stages of this progressive outfit was challenging due to the high requirements, achieved by only a select few. Were you one of them? Congratulations — you own one of the rarest skins.
Sofia
Rarity | Epic |
Sofia is an Epic Outfit inspired by a character from John Wick: Chapter 3, played by Halle Berry. This female skin features stylish leather attire, an exposed face, and blonde hair tied back in a ponytail.
Sofia was added to the game during Season 9, on June 28, 2019, and is part of the John Wick Set, priced at 1,500 V-Bucks at the Item Shop. Interestingly, while John’s outfit occasionally returns to the store, Sofia disappeared from the market on March 25, 2021, and has not returned since, making it one of the rarest skins available.
Reflex
Rarity: | Rare |
Reflex is a Rare Skin from the Counterattack Set, depicting an operative in a green outfit with a tactical vest, cap, and balaclava exposing only the eyes.
This skin was available through redeeming a code from the GeForce Fortnite Bundle 1 in March 2019, which came as a bonus with eligible NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards. However, it was accidentally added to the Item Shop in Season 7, where it could be purchased for 1,200 V-Bucks. Developers quickly removed it from sale.
Reflex is one of the few skins available through two methods and hasn’t returned to the store in years.
Double Helix
Rarity | Epic |
Double Helix is an Epic Outfit included in the Double Helix Bundle Pack. This skin depicts a futuristic operative with goggles and a mask covering the face, dressed in a white, red, and black outfit with a hood.
Double Helix is another example of a skin that was available during a promotional campaign. It could be acquired as part of the limited edition Nintendo Switch x Fortnite bundle in 2018 or by purchasing the entire Double Helix Bundle for a hefty price of $299.99.
Here, too, time has contributed to the rarity of this skin. It was available for a short period in 2018, and its price in the Item Shop didn’t attract many players. If you managed to get it through one means or another, consider yourself truly lucky!
Honor Guard
Rarity | Epic |
Honor Guard is an Epic Outfit that debuted during Season 7. It features a character dressed entirely in blue, wearing a motorcycle jacket and a helmet that completely covers the face.
Honor Guard was never available in the Item Shop. The only way to obtain it was by purchasing the HONOR View20 smartphone for approximately $650 in 2018. This device wasn’t particularly popular, so not many players had the chance to get the Honor Guard. A second opportunity to acquire it has never arisen.
This makes it one of the rarest skins in the entire game!
Aerial Assault Trooper
Rarity | Rare |
To conclude, two skins share the top spot as the rarest in the game! The first is Aerial Assault Trooper, a Rare Outfit that transforms your character into a relatively ordinary green-clad soldier wearing a helmet.
This skin was available in 2017, right after the game’s release, during Chapter 1, Season 1. It could be unlocked by reaching Level 15 in the Season Shop and then purchased for 1,200 V-Bucks.
Renegade Raider
Rarity | Rare |
Renegade Raider is a Rare Outfit for a female character that, similar to Aerial Assault Trooper, isn’t particularly flashy. The character is equipped with a pilot’s cap, goggles, a tactical harness, and orange-and-brown clothing.
This skin could also only be obtained during Chapter 1, Season 1, by first reaching Level 20 in the Season Shop and then spending 1,200 V-Bucks.
Both Renegade Raider and Aerial Assault Trooper are OG skins, considered the rarest in the game. Back when Fortnite was new, purchasing skins wasn’t very popular, so only a small number of players obtained them. As a result, these outfits are now owned by a very limited number of players — and only those who have been playing Fortnite since the very beginning!
Black Knight
Rarity: | Legendary |
Black Knight is a Legendary Outfit whose name captures perfectly its essence, and it must be said—it looks really cool. This skin is part of the Fort Knights Set.
Obtaining this skin was no easy feat. It was a reward for completing the Chapter 1, Season 2 Battle Pass, but not everyone could get it. The requirement was to reach Tier 70 during that season. It was never available in the Item Shop.
This skin is among the rarest, not only because it was released a whopping seven years ago (practically ancient history, shortly after the game’s launch) but also because earning it was quite challenging, and only a few managed to do so.
Galaxy
Rarity | Epic |
Galaxy is an Epic Outfit in Fortnite that is absolutely stunning, transforming your character into a galactic warrior made entirely of cosmic matter!
Part of the Galaxy Set, this skin was released in Season 5 (June 2018) and tied to the marketing campaign and promotion of new Samsung Galaxy devices. Players could only obtain it by playing three matches on a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or Samsung Galaxy Tab S4.
Although easy to obtain during its release, its exclusivity to Samsung devices and a short promotional period make it incredibly rare.
Summary
Here’s a list of some of the rarest skins in Fortnite. We’ve shown you just 10, but in fact, there are a few more. Some were tied to global events, such as World Warrior, released for the World Cup 2019; others accompanied promotional campaigns, like Royale Bomber, which was a bonus with a new PS4 controller; and still others, like Shaman, were sold in the Item Shop for a limited time.
What they all have in common is that they are no longer available for unlocking in the game. How to get them, then? Now, the only way to grab rare skins is by purchasing them on online auctions and marketplaces for real money. Remember, though, that purchasing some of these skins back in time was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and they will likely never return to sale — even in the real world. So, if you own any of them, you are truly one of the lucky ones!
