Far Cry

Far Cry is a first-person shooter action video game developed by Crytek and published by Ubisoft. The game takes the player to an uncharted island on the South Pacific, where a mysterious company is carrying out experiments turning animals and humans into mutants. The player character, Jack Carver, will have to face these dangerous creatures with a variety of weapons, as well as using the jungle environment to his advantage. The original game combines FPS gameplay with stealth, giving the player a chance to choose their approach to any given situation. The first Far Cry video game received positive reviews from the critics and spawned several sequels.

Welcome to the Jungle

An integral part of Far Cry's gameplay mechanics is its open-world environment. The player is given a significant amount of freedom in how they want to approach the objectives, with more than one way to carry them out. The jungle provides excellent cover for the player wanting to avoid confrontation or launch surprise attacks on the enemy. Throughout the game, the player will be able to use a variety of weapons, including melee and firearms like pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, and grenade launchers, among others.

The opponents will do their best to outmaneuver the player, using suppressive fire to pin the player down and flanking them. If the player gains the advantage in battle, the NPCs can summon backup using flare guns.

Jack vs. the mutants

Jack Carver, an ex-US Special Forces member, lives from giving boat trips to wealthy tourists visiting Micronesia. When a woman named Valerie Constantine hires him to take her to a remote archipelago, he doesn't think twice before doing it. This trip, however, might be a little more than he bargained for as the girl disappears in the jungle, and his boat is blown up by a rocket. Stranded on the island patrolled by armed mercenaries, Jack has no other choice but to find Val and get the hell out of there. Aided by a man named Doyle, he ventures further into the deep jungle, finding out what exactly the mercs’ employees have been doing here.

Reception

Far Cry was received with positive reviews from the critics. Most praises were given to the graphics and storytelling of the game. The open-world gameplay mechanics were also noted among the positives. Far Cry was nominated to various awards and won several of them, including the first place Best Graphics at 2004's German Developer's Game Awards.
