Indika

Indika is a game that debuted on May 2nd, 2024, on PC and on May 17th on ninth-generation consoles — PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. This title is a surreal indie narrative-driven adventure with arcade elements.

The game was created by the independent developer Odd Meter, based in Kazakhstan, and published by the Polish studio 11 bit studios, known primarily for their outstanding game This War Of Mine. Interestingly, Odd Meter has committed to donating part of the proceeds from game sales to aid Ukrainian children affected by the Russian invasion.

Plot

The game is set in an alternate version of 19th-century Russia, where religious visions intertwine with reality. Players will have the chance to explore fascinating and atmospheric locations — from snowy wastelands and grim villages inhabited by impoverished residents to almost steampunk industrial complexes.

In the game, you play as the eponymous Indika, a young nun who leaves the convent on a mission to deliver a letter from the prioress. Along the way, she meets a young man, Ilya, fleeing from the Tsar’s soldiers. He believes he must find a certain relic, which he thinks will grant him health. Their shared experience turns into an emotional journey for self-discovery.

Interestingly, Indika is not only accompanied by Ilya but also by two inner voices: her own, which serves as a kind of narrator, and another, male voice that often questions her choices and morality. Is this the whisper of the devil or a product of her mind, fatigued by mental illness?

Gameplay

Indika offers a very intriguing gameplay experience. The game is played from a third-person perspective and features highly immersive storytelling. 

It primarily focuses on exploration, solving minor puzzles, and finding collectibles, which are typical elements of adventure games. However, there are also arcade elements that seem to be taken from an entirely different game. Despite this, everything is well and interestingly integrated, providing a truly engaging experience for the player.
