How did the ball start rolling?

The earliest football games can be dated all the way back to the 1970s. In 1979, Mattel released NASL Soccer - the first ever football game. The game came out for Intellivision, Mattel's own gaming console. Like many titles from that decade, NASL Soccer offered rudimentary graphics and gameplay mechanics. However, it could be played in local multiplayer.

The eighties brought the development of new consoles and new games. 1981 saw the release of Pelé’s Soccer for Atari 2600, followed two years later by International Soccer for Commodore 64. In 1982, Kevin Toms and Addictive Games presented Football Manager on ZX Spectrum 48k, the first game in a series that would become the first in the line of sports management titles. The last year of the decade brought the players Dino Dini's Kick Off, an Atari title fondly remembered for its complex gameplay mechanics.

The 1990s saw the release of many advanced football games. But none of them could hold a candle to FIFA International Soccer. The first edition of what has now become a yearly offering of EA Sports wowed the players with excellent mechanics and visuals. Since then, FIFA was one of the best-selling football game series, featuring advanced gameplay, licensed stadiums and players, and a robust multiplayer mode. Said multiplayer mode - FIFA Ultimate Team - continues to draw in more web players who want to create their own team made of international football stars and put them against other player-made teams.
