I went into Cairn thinking it would be ā€œjust another climbing sim,ā€ but the first time I inched my way up a sheer face and realized I’d manually moved every limb, my palms were actually sweating. The moment I finally reached a ledge after ten minutes of tiny, deliberate moves, I put the controller down and just stared at the screen like I’d summited for real. The whole system feels less like pressing buttons and more like solving a physical puzzle with your own body as the answer. It’s the first time in years a game has made me breathe in rhythm with my character, because one sloppy grab really does feel like it could ruin everything.

There’s this one campsite halfway up the mountain where I just stopped, rotated the camera, and kind of… zoned out. The sky was this deep blue, snow drifted across the rock, and the valley below looked absurdly peaceful, like a wallpaper I’d pay for. I wasn’t progressing any objective, just sitting there letting the atmosphere wash over me while the soundtrack hummed quietly in the background. It’s rare that a game convinces me to stop ā€œgamingā€ and just exist in a place, but Cairn’s mountain vibes did exactly that
