New Super Lucky's Tale

New Super Lucky’s Tale is a 3D platforming game for Nintendo Switch, developed by and published by Playful Corp. The game is inspired by such classic titles as Banjo-Kazooie and Crash Bandicoot. In New Super Lucky’s Tale, the player controls the titular character – a little fox with a knack for helping others. This time he must protect the Book of Ages from the paws of evil cat Jinx. The game features four colorful worlds where the player can test their platforming skills looking for various items and completing challenges. The game received a positive reception from the critics – mostly for the nostalgic vibe, colorful visuals and decent gameplay mechanics.

A gameplay homage to the classics

The gameplay mechanics of New Super Lucky’s Tale immediately bring to mind classic platforming games of the ’90s. The world of the game is divided into four locations connected by the hub. Each location is comprised of levels, which the player has to complete to progress the story. To complete each level, four clovers, awarded for passing challenges, finding letters that spell the word LUCKY, collecting coins, etc.

Lucky, the main character of the game is not only clever and brave but also very agile. Our little fox can jump over obstacles, burrow in the ground, digging out hidden items and swipe his tail to attack. The player will have to employ all of these skills to pass challenges waiting in the levels.

The challenges the player will have to face involve employing the character’s mobility. They include jumping across gaps, burrowing under obstacles and swiping at hidden platforms to activate them. Each challenge is different also in its presentation – some involve roaming about a 3D arena solving puzzles, others are 2D side-scrolling obstacle courses.

Story of a friendly fox

Lucky is a small fox with a brave heart. His only wish is to help those in trouble. When his sister asks him to help her guard the Book of Ages – a mysterious volume containing entire worlds and people living in them – Lucky doesn’t hesitate to do it. When an evil cat Jinx decides to steal the Book, Lucky must gather all of his courage and go after Jinx to stop him from causing harm to the inhabitants of the worlds within the Book of Ages.  On his quest, he will face many challenges and dangers but Lucky won’t give up until the book is safely returned!

New Super Lucky’s Tale received solid reviews from the critics. Many praised the game for the gameplay mechanics, reminiscent of the platforming titles of old. Reviewers praised the fun of playing as the little fox and taking on various challenges, which put the players' creativity to the test in using Lucky’s talents. The critics noted how balanced the game was, making it a perfect starting point for the beginners in the platforming genre, as well as those who spent hours of their childhood jumping over spiky holes as Crash and many others.
