The story of the game lets players explore the frozen continent of Northrend and follow the footsteps of Arthas – once a prince and currently the horrible Lich King. After his enormous attack on Kalimdor and Easter Kingdoms, Horde and Alliance forces decide to retaliate and get rid of the Lich King's menace once and for all. On the way to the horrifying fortress of Icecrown Citadel, players will go through many new zones and have a chance to visit the mystical city of Dalaran.

The most important aspects of Wrath of the Lich King were new continent (Northrend) and the introduction of the first hero class – the death knight. The class is accessible to players after having a character reach level 55. The expansion pack also raised level cap to 80 and introduced new trade skill called Inscription. Apart from that, players get the chance to participate in a battle on a dedicated PvP zone (even on PvE servers) in central Northrend called Wintergrasp.
