Battletoads

New Battletoads game (2020) is a combination of a classic platformer, with elements of beat em' up game. It is sort of an inheritor of the iconic game released on NES consoles in 1991 by Rare. Battletoads game features very challenging gameplay and the original title was considered as one of the most difficult video games in history. The game features cartoon graphics and a dynamic, hard-rock soundtrack. The developers tried to recreate the original game's experience, adjusting it for modern systems.

Storyline

The titular Battletoads - Zitz, Rash, and Pimple are the main characters of the game. The protagonists wake up after a long slumber that lasted 26 years and find out someone has imprisoned them in a fantasy simulator bunker. The Toads realize, that people no longer see them as heroes, and they have been forgotten. In order to reclaim their former position and respect, they decide to embark on a dangerous quest aiming to defeat the Dark Queen, their greatest enemy from the old days. However, it seems that she is not the most dangerous enemy after all. Friends decide to join forces with their former nemesis to face the new antagonist - evil Topians, an alien race, responsible for stealing the Dark Queen's power and trapping the heroes in the bunker.

Gameplay

The classic Battletoads game from 1991 was considered the most difficult game ever made. The remake from 2020 aims to be equally challenging. It is a side-scrolling, beat em' up arcade game, created by Dlala Studios working together with Rare. During the gameplay, we can choose the character and take face the challenges prepared by the developers. What's important, each hero is characterized by a different playstyle. The gameplay itself is very difficult and requires a lot of reflex and patience. It mixes elements of many game genres -players will have to beat numerous traps and gaps, solve environmental puzzles, and fight with enemies.

As a tribute to the classic game from the 90s, the remake features the infamous Turbo Tunnel level that is known for its absurd difficulty level. However, instead of a classic side-view, the action within the Turbo Tunnel is presented from the third-person perspective, with the camera placed behind the back of our hero. The game features up to 3 players' cooperation mode, in which players can team up and take on the challenge together.
