The Warden and The Paunch is a downloadable expansion pack for Total War: WARHAMMER II, a turn-based real-time tactics game, developed by Creative Assembly and published by SEGA. The game is set in the world of the Games Workshop’s Warhammer and features the gameplay mechanics of CA’s Total War series.

In TW&tP, the player can play as two new factions: the High Elves of Yvresse with Eltharion the Grim as their Legendary Lord, and the Greenskins’ Broken Axe tribe, led by Grom the Paunch. The DLC introduces new units and campaigns for both factions. The expansion was met with positive reviews and praised for providing additional context to the lore of High Elves and Greenskins.

About Total War: WARHAMMER II

Total War: WARHAMMER II combines the turn-based gameplay aspects of Creative Assembly’s Total War series with the world of Warhammer, created by Games Workshop. The player can select one of several playable factions and lead them to victory in story campaign mode or multiplayer battles. Each faction has its unique warriors, including special units called the Legendary Lords. These units can be deployed to turn the tide of the encounter in the players’ favor.  The game also features a settlement management and diplomacy mechanics, a staple of Total War series.

The High Elves of Yvresse

The new faction of the High Elves hails from the Kingdom of Yvresse. There, Prince Eltharion rules his people, hidden from the sight of his enemies behind the thick veil of mist surrounding the kingdom. In combat, the faction relies on its strong infantry, including the High Elven Rangers and Silverin Guard, beast units, consisting of War Lions and Arcane Phoenixes, and three Regiments of Renown. The Legendary Lord Eltharion provides his units with several boosts, such as increased melee defense for Spear Infantry and Rangers.

Grom the Paunch and the might of the Greenskins

The Greenskins’ tribe of the Broken Axe is the second new faction introduced in the DLC. Their leader, Grom the Paunch and Prince Eltharion of the Yvresse are sworn enemies, holding a grudge over each other for bloodshed on both sides of the conflict. The new  Greenskin units consist of River and Stone Trolls, deadly Snotling Pump Wagons, and a hero unit of Giant river Troll Hag. As the Legendary Lord, Grom the Paunch influences his troops with additional physical resistance and decreased upkeep of pump wagons. In combat with High Elves, he receives a boost in Leadership skills.

Reception

Total War: WARHAMMER II  - The Warden & the Paunch received positive reviews from the critics. The reviewers noted that the DLC expanded on the lore of both the Goblin King and High Elven Prince, giving the player a chance to settle the matter in the long-lasting conflict between the factions.
