About An Octave Higher

The industrial revolution brought about by magical science and engineering also has brought a host of societal issues to the magical city of Overture. There are two distinct social classes: the bourgeoisie, and the proletariat. An Octave Higher is a visual novel that expresses this struggle in an unbalanced society. A proletariat largely comprised of impoverished factory workers who spend their days casting magical spells to assemble magic machines struggles with the wealthy and capitalistic class of bourgeoisie.

In the world of Overture, these magic machines are able to cast all kinds of magic spells, with one exception: they can't cast healing magic, because it does not work on inanimate objects.

An Octave Higher is the story of Franz Byron, a magical science student who is researching just that - the effect of healing magic on inanimate objects. In this divided world, he finds Elise Shelley, a proletariat factory worker, outside a factory trying to repair a broken piano by casting a healing spell.

In An Octave Higher, you will experience the novel-length story of this magical and industrial world inspired by 19th-century European architecture, with hand-drawn backgrounds and story illustrations, and get to see multiple story endings based on your choices. However, there is only one true ending.
