Battlefield series belongs to the gaming pantheon of classics, hands down. Revered by millions, it began in 2002 with Battlefield 1942. This first-person shooter made by a Swedish studio, DICE (now EA DICE), was truly epic in scale, at least at the time it was released.

Battlefield 1942 mixed class-based first-person action, vehicular and aerial combat, large maps and conquest-based objectives. All this encouraged strong cooperation in capturing control points to gain advantage over the opposing force, deplete enemy reinforcement reserves and win the battle. Each soldier class encouraged a different playstyle and featured a unique set of strengths and drawbacks. You could also commandeer tanks, fighter planes, cannons and the like, making the game feel like a complete WW2 experience.

Coupled with a rather realistic portrayal of major World War II battles and the ability to play as either the Allied or the Axis, Battlefield 1942 became a huge hit that spawned an entire franchise, with new games being released to this day (and Battlefield V returning to the WW2 theme). Once Battlefield games embraced the Frostbite engine, they started featuring almost entirely destructible environments.

The Battlefield series didn’t just focus on the Second World War, though. These games also covered the Vietnam War (Battlefield: Vietnam), modern military conflicts (Battlefield 2, 3 and 4), the First World War (Battlefield 1) and futuristic, science fiction-inspired battles (Battlefield 2142). There was also Battlefield Heroes, a cartoony take on World War II, as well as Battlefield: Hardline, inspired by the cops and robbers theme, plus a whole slew of expansion packs, DLCs and other spin-offs, including Bad Company 1 and 2.

Battlefield 2042

The latest in the series, Battlefield 2042 brings back modern combat, but with the addition of the latest hi-tech weapons: drones and deployable turrets. Set in a not-so-distant future where global governments collapsed, starting a world-wide crisis, fueled by satellites crashing down on Earth, Battlefield 2042 is about a war between the United States and Russia.

There are 3 game modes available. “All-Out War” consists of two separate modes: Conquest and Breakthrough. The former has the opposing teams capture control points, while in the latter one team defends its control points from the opponents. Hazard Zone is a co-operative mode where teams of players race to extract as much data from fallen satellites as possible. And then there is the Portal mode where players can modify the gameplay, customize game rules and play on a wide variety of maps, including a selection of those from the previous installments.
