Star Wars Squadrons received positive initial reception from the critics. The early previews of the game praised Electronic Arts for taking a step away from their mainstay Star Wars series, which is the Battlefront series. Taking the focus away from epic ground battles and putting it into no less epic, albeit long unexplored starship dogfights was considered a bold move, but a welcome one. The reviewers noted that the game’s mechanics, including fist person perspective and detailed flight simulation, had a lot in common with the cult-classic X-Wing series, considered to be some of the best titles set in the world of Star Wars.
