Best Rhythm Games

If you’re looking for some casual fun, rhythm games for PC may be the way to go. The rhythm genre is all about testing one’s reflexes and reaction time – your job is usually to press the correct buttons at the very precise moment, and everything is synced up with the music.

Rhythm games usually come in one of the two types – some games try to create a somewhat accurate experience that allows you to feel like you are playing the music yourself, while the other ones are made purely for entertainment and they either just spawn notes according to the rhythm, but not necessarily to make you feel like a musician, or they use the music in some other creative way to deliver a more unique kind of gameplay.

Games like Guitar Hero and its clones represent the first group. The notes that appear on the screen follow a predictable and logical pattern – the lower notes appear on one side of the screen, while the higher notes appear on the opposite one. This creates an illusion that you are actually taking part in live music performance as a musician, not just a listener or a bystander. There are even games like Rocksmith that take this concept to a whole new level – in Rocksmith you can play the music using a real electric guitar, which makes this game an incredibly valuable learning tool to master your real-world playing skills.

The second group is represented by games like an overwhelmingly popular Beat Saber designed for virtual reality headsets or BPM: Bullets Per Minute, an incredibly addictive FPS. The first of the mentioned titles spawn various notes according to the rhythm and your job is to swing the controllers in the air to hit them in the correct way. It’s certainly a fun game to try and even a great option for a party game – although there is no proper local multiplayer mode, you can always pass the controller to your friend and compete this way.

The second title doesn’t spawn any notes at all – Bullets Per Minute is a first-person shooter game with epic rock and metal background music. The rhythm gameplay part comes when you realize that your weapon’s fire and reload sounds mix incredibly well with the current track, which allows you to add your own personal touch to the music. Killing evil creatures can’t get much better than that.

Alternatively, you can go for Pistol Whip – another VR game that focuses on shooting down the enemies in the rhythm of some amazing electronic music that helps to build the atmosphere and allows you to feel like a true badass that walks down the alley and takes down the baddies.
