Players create a custom avatar and explore the first two floors of the floating castle Aincrad, fighting alongside an AI partner in real-time melee combat, since magic and ranged weapons like bows are unavailable by the game's setting rules.

The Standard Edition includes only the base game. The Deluxe Edition adds the Expansion DLC, a Starter Pack of early-game currency and consumables, and early access to Death Game Mode.

The Ultimate Edition includes everything in Deluxe plus the Unanswered//butterfly Bonus Contents App, a roughly 120-minute animated feature, digital artbook, and soundtrack, as well as an Armor Pack.
