A Game of Thrones Board Game - Digital Edition is a digital version of the iconic strategy board game set in the Song of Ice and Fire universe by George R.R. Martin. Originally published by Fantasy Flight Games, its digital adaptation is the responsibility of Dire Wolf, a studio specializing in such projects, with digital versions of Sagrada and Raiders games by the North Sea.

Story

The action of the game takes place after the death of King Robert Baratheon. On the Westeros map, the player represents one of the great families of the Seven Kingdoms. Unfortunately, you are not the one who wants it, because there is a struggle for power at stake, which is why there are plots and intrigues, battles, and arms races, as well as care for the economy known from books and popular HBO series.

Gameplay

The beginning of the game is the time to choose the house you want to represent. The players can choose between different houses: Lannisters, Starks, Greyjoys, Martells, Tyrells, and Baratheons. Each starts in a different location on the Westeros map that corresponds to their clan's headquarters, has different starting resources and generals with different abilities. The game is divided into 10 rounds, with players taking both overt and hidden actions. Hidden actions involve all players playing special tokens on their armies at the start of each turn, revealing them, and resolving their orders in the order that is affected by the player's initiative level. The military may be composed of infantry, knights, siege weapons, and ships, and each type has a different strength. Units are used to conquer new territories and defend against attacks from other players. During the battle, the player whose military strength is greater wins, but the result can be conquered by special cards of your clan.

A game full of intrigue

Just like in the series of Game of Thrones, its board version could not lack intrigue, manipulation, and shaky alliances, because there can be only one winner. And so, long conversations between players and getting to the terms of the alliance as well as evil dealings with artificial intelligence are permissible. In addition to fighting for the throne, players have another goal in common: the cooperation of providing power tokens to power the Night Watch, whose task is to keep watch on the ice wall to prevent wild Free People attacking the Westeros.

Reception

The game received many positive reviews from players and critics. Most of them admired the complexity of the game, which is easy enough to learn, but on the other hand, challenging, so it's quite hard to master all the features. What is more, they praised the game for its graphic design as well as climatic music, which is well-known from the GoT series.
