Gameplay
Thanquol adds a campaign built around manipulation, preparation and the unpredictable nature of Skaven plotting. His Masterplans allow players to recruit special underlings who operate behind the scenes and develop their own abilities while carrying out military, economic or magical operations.
Military plans can secretly assemble armies before launching surprise attacks against selected settlements. Economic schemes focus on stealing resources such as coin, food and Warpstone, while magical plans involve rituals capable of producing powerful supernatural effects. Schemes added during each turn can strengthen a plan, but unexpected Complications can interfere with Thanquol's carefully arranged operations. Players can spend Warpstone and work with other Skaven clans to gain additional tricks and improve their chances of success.
On the battlefield, Thanquol combines the traditional Skaven approach of expendable troops with powerful monsters, ranged weapons and magic. He uses spells from the Lores of Plague and Ruin and can eventually unlock the Dreaded Thirteenth spell. Boneripper transforms Thanquol into a much more durable combatant, while Verminlords, Stormfiends and specialised artillery provide numerous options for breaking heavily defended enemy formations.
Story
Grey Seer Thanquol is a treacherous and ambitious servant of the Great Horned Rat whose schemes have repeatedly placed him at the centre of major events in Skaven history. Even his greatest disasters rarely prevent him from claiming that everything happened exactly as intended.
As the world enters a period of growing turmoil, Thanquol sees another opportunity to increase his influence. The Council of Thirteen is preparing plans of enormous importance, and the Grey Seer intends to ensure that he emerges from the coming chaos with even greater power. Gathering his underlings and awakening the monstrous Boneripper, Thanquol begins another series of schemes designed to spread destruction while advancing his own ambitions.
Graphics
Thanquol's forces expand the dark fantasy visual style of Total War: WARHAMMER III with a mixture of Skaven corruption, daemonic creatures, biological experimentation and unstable Warpstone machinery. Massive Verminlords tower over conventional infantry, while Stormfiends combine mutated Rat Ogre bodies with mechanical weapons created by the Skaven clans.
Units such as the Warp-Doom Magma Cannon and Cauldron of a Thousand Poxes reinforce the Skaven's deliberately chaotic aesthetic, filling large battles with magical energy, toxic attacks, artillery fire and grotesque monsters. Thanquol himself can fight from atop Boneripper, creating a distinctive centrepiece for Skaven armies.
