Gameplay
Valheim combines open-world survival, base building, and boss-driven progression across a world built from ten interconnected biomes. Players venture into a new biome, gather its unique resources, craft matching gear, food, and potions, and ultimately summon that region's boss at a dedicated altar using specific offerings. Defeating a boss drops a trophy that can be placed on a central altar for a permanent power-up, unlocking the tools needed to survive the next, harsher biome. Outside combat, players build increasingly elaborate structures using a stability-based system, sail longships to distant shores, and manage food, farming, and taming to sustain longer expeditions, with full crossplay letting groups of up to ten players share the same world across PC and console.

Story

Valheim casts players as a fallen Viking warrior, brought back by Odin's raven and dropped into the tenth Norse world, a purgatory where the old gods' greatest enemies were once banished. To earn a place among the honored dead in Valhalla, players must hunt down and defeat the Forsaken, ancient and corrupted guardian spirits tied to each biome, working their way from the safety of the Meadows through the Black Forest, Swamp, Mountains, Plains, Mistlands, and Ashlands, before finally confronting the icy dangers of the Deep North added in the 1.0 update.
Graphics
Valheim presents its Norse mythology through a distinctive low-poly, painterly art style softened by atmospheric fog, dynamic lighting, and a muted, moody color palette. Each biome carries a strikingly different visual identity, from the misty, foreboding Black Forest to the fog-covered ruins of the Mistlands and the volcanic red glow of the Ashlands, with the new Deep North bringing icy, wind-swept vistas to close out the game's visual journey at launch on PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
