Beyond a Steel Sky is a science fiction adventure game by the unrivalled Revolution Software released in 2020. It is also a sequel to the famous Beneath a Steel Sky from 1994, the story continues here, but you don't have to be familiar with the plot of the first part to fully enjoy the sequel's content. Work on Beyond a Steel Sky was undertaken by the creators of the previous title in cooperation with cartoonist Dave Gibbons, who is known primarily for his astonishing work on the famous series "Watchmen".

Story

The story continues, but it is also an independent plot, so players who have not had the pleasure to get to know Beneath a Steel Sky should have no problem discovering their way in this world. We play the role of Robert Foster, who swore to find a child lost as a result of a brutal attack. As it turns out, it wasn't the only kid who happened to go missing recently. Robert travels to Union City - one of the last cities left in the world devoured by conflicts. He must find himself in a reality ruled by artificial intelligence, recognize between good and evil and uncover the truth hidden under precisely constructed puzzles.

Gameplay

Beneath a Steel Sky was in its time quite a unique indie title due to the cyberpunk character, not as popular in these years as it is now. And although the sequel had to wait a quarter of a century, and cyberpunk productions are flooding the market, patience, in this case, has unquestionably paid off.

The Union City looks like the happiest place on earth - at first glance. Is this really so? Don't get tricked by the cheerful, colorful graphics - this place is full of dark mysteries that must be revealed sooner or later. It is not a standard point-n-click adventure, but rather a very open world, full of interesting characters and puzzles, sensitive to all actions of the player and responding to them appropriately. It is also worth adding that the creators of the game desired to convey the atmosphere of "1984" as well as possible but in the form of a science fiction adventure game in which artificial intelligence is involved in surveillance.

Reception

Beyond a Steel Sky was met with great enthusiasm and positive reviews by players familiar with the first game from 1994, mainly due to the remastered graphics, mechanics and, of course, nostalgia. However, for everyone else it is also a pretty treat because the story is told in a truly engaging and interesting way, the puzzles are an excellent diversion that allows you to use your head, and the atmosphere of mystery just draws you to the game.
