Mad Max
Mad Max has a few noteworthy similarities to the Fallout setting. The world in an inhospitable wasteland left behind a war, survival is very hard for any individual, so alliances of convenience result in mostly peaceful strongholds or violent bandit groups under the banner of warlord Scabrous Scrotus. Mad Max won’t satisfy your RPG cravings (despite separate upgrade systems for Max, his equipment, and his car), but it has immersion in spades. Weather effects are great, exploring the world yields small stories on old postcards and the like,
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. takes place in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone which suffered a second disaster. The overload caused the appearance of weird mutations in local life forms, as well as physics-defying phenomena, which in turn drew people who seek to profit from artifacts and scientific data. Shadow fo Chernobyl is one of the most immersive, thematically fascinating games of its time. It is easily one of the best games revolving around the science fiction stories involving radiation. Worth checking if this nuclear fiction is what you like about Fallout.
Wasteland 2
The original Wasteland from 1988 was an inspiration for the original Fallout, so in terms of games similar to Fallout it clearly has a solid head-start. While the Fallout series went for TPP/FPP action game presentation with strong RPG elements, Wasteland 2 and 3 stayed true to their turn based tactical roots. Wasteland 2 has fairly complex RPG mechanics and making a custom team of wasteland rangers can take some time, but there’s an interesting murder mystery to investigate, so it’s worth the effort. The party can be as big as seven characters: three NPC companions aiding four player-designed characters.
The Outer Worlds
The Outer Worlds isn’t set in a post-apocalyptic irradiated wasteland. Instead, it’s not only set in an alternate reality, but also IN SPACE colonised by megacorporations which have been growing in power since 1901. You play as an unlucky colonist who’ll be stuck in cryosleep until you launch the game. It’s a competent mix of a shooter and RPG, with an interesting perk system, memorable companions, and solid storyline. It’s also full of lively colours, even in human settlements, which look just like Fallout’s would if they weren’t scraped clean of paint by sandstorms and radiation. Definitely check it out.
Plenty of rad games
The list above features just a few cool examples, but the gallery below holds many more games which will be able to scratch your Fallout itch, in whatever form it may come: aesthetic, post-apocalypse, gameplay features, etc. Take a look, you’ll definitely find something suitable.
